Diet for Mounjaro: Foods To Support Better Results

Written by Philip Bazire | August 06, 2026

There is no single official meal plan that everybody taking Mounjaro should follow. However, what you eat while taking the medication still matters.

Mounjaro is intended to be used alongside a balanced diet and regular physical activity. A sensible approach focuses on nutrient-dense foods, sufficient protein, suitable portions and meals that can be maintained in the long term.

Choosing appropriate foods and portion sizes may also make some gastrointestinal side effects easier to manage.

What to Eat for Better Results

When starting treatment, you should find that your appetite decreases. However, eating considerably less does not automatically mean that your diet is nutritionally balanced.

When your overall food intake falls, food quality becomes particularly important because you have less food from which to obtain essential nutrients. The goal should not simply be to eat as little as possible. Instead, aim to make the food you do eat nutritionally worthwhile.

Make Protein a Priority

Protein deserves particular attention during weight loss because it helps support muscle.

Aim to include a palm-sized portion of protein with each main meal. Suitable sources include chicken and turkey breast, fish and seafood, eggs, Greek yoghurt, tofu, tempeh, edamame, beans, lentils and chickpeas.

One practical approach is to choose your protein source first and then build the remainder of the meal around vegetables, fibre-rich foods and an appropriate amount of healthy fat.

Include Fibre-Rich Vegetables, Fruit and Whole Foods

Dietary restriction while taking Mounjaro does not require you to eliminate carbohydrates.

Fibre contributes to normal digestion and bowel function. However, if your appetite is reduced or you are experiencing nausea, high-fibre meals may feel uncomfortable.

Smaller, balanced meals containing a moderate amount of fibre from vegetables, fruit, whole grains and lean sources of protein may be easier to tolerate.

Include Healthy Fats in Sensible Portions

Healthy fats form part of a nutritious diet. Sources include avocados, olives, nuts, some seeds (chia, flax), extra virgin olive oil and oily fish such as salmon and mackerel.

Fat is energy dense, so portion size is important. Including large quantities of oil, butter, cheese or nuts in your diet can make it harder to maintain an appropriate overall energy intake.

Foods That May Be Worth Limiting

There is no universal list of forbidden foods when taking Mounjaro, but some foods and eating patterns may make gastrointestinal symptoms harder to manage.

Fried or very high-fat foods may worsen nausea, indigestion or uncomfortable fullness in some people. Sugary snacks and drinks can add substantial amounts of energy without providing nutritional value or satiety. Large portions may also aggravate bloating or reflux.

Pay attention to how you respond to different foods and prioritise choices that support both comfort and adequate nutrition.

Plan Meals to Support Consistent Nutrition

A reduced appetite can make it surprisingly easy to reach the end of the day without having eaten enough protein or a balanced range of foods.

Keeping convenient protein-rich foods in the fridge, preparing vegetables in advance and choosing smaller meals when larger portions feel uncomfortable can make it easier to eat well. Maintaining adequate fluid intake is also important.

Building Habits for Long-Term Success

One benefit of following a structured eating pattern during treatment is the opportunity to establish habits that will be useful afterwards.

Regular protein intake, the inclusion of vegetables, sensible portion sizes and routine physical activity all form part of a sustainable approach to weight management.

What Does a Balanced Meal Look Like?

A well-proportioned meal will vary between individuals, but it might include:

  • a palm-sized serving of lean meat, fish or plant-based protein
  • around half a plate of non-starchy vegetables or salad, which may include some root vegetables
  • a small portion of whole grains or legumes
  • a small serving of healthy fats

Remember that increased fullness and delayed gastric emptying when on treatment with Mounjaro mean you should limit your portion size. Using a plate a bit smaller than you think you would like to use will help you manage your serving size.

As Mounjaro is a prescription treatment, significant dietary changes should be discussed with your prescribing clinician. The best diet for Mounjaro is not an unnecessarily restrictive fad diet. It is a balanced and sustainable approach that supports adequate nutrition, helps preserve muscle and takes account of any treatment-related side effects.
