Weight Loss Injections Before and After

Written by Philip Bazire | October 22, 2026

Weight loss injections are now among the most talked-about options in weight management and many people want a realistic picture of weight loss injections, before and after use, to help them decide whether treatment is right for them.

This article gives a general overview of what tends to change, how the main treatments work and what a well-supported approach looks like. Wegovy and Mounjaro each have their own dosing, mechanism, side effect profile and considerations.

Understanding Weight Loss Injections

The new injectable treatments used for weight management in the UK belong to a group of medicines that act on gut hormone pathways involved in appetite and blood sugar regulation. By influencing these signals, they can reduce hunger and help people feel satisfied after smaller amounts of food.

What they do not do is change the habits that shaped someone's weight in the first place. The period during treatment is best thought of as an opportunity: appetite is easier to manage, which makes it an ideal moment to build routines around nutrition, activity, sleep and eating behaviour that can support you well beyond the injections themselves.

Understanding How Weight Loss Injections Work

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both the GLP-1 and GIP pathways, while Wegovy contains semaglutide, which acts only on the GLP-1 pathway. Both pathways are involved in appetite and blood-sugar regulation, and the action of these drugs can reduce hunger and help people feel satisfied after smaller amounts of food. Their effects are broadly similar, though Mounjaro tends to achieve somewhat greater average weight loss; however, either treatment is sufficient for most people. Understanding that weight loss injections work in this way helps explain why many people describe an opportunity to reconsider what, when and why they eat, rather than simply eating the same foods in smaller quantities.

Mounjaro and Wegovy should never be seen as stand-alone solutions. The period during treatment is an opportunity to build habits around nutrition, movement, sleep and eating behaviour that can support weight management well beyond the injections themselves.

Weight Loss Injections Before and After: What Changes to Expect

Results vary considerably from person to person, so be cautious of any claim that these injections work for everyone. What tends to be more consistent is the general pattern.

Appetite changes are often noticed before any significant change in weight. Usual portions may begin to feel too large, and many people report less interest in snacking and fewer persistent cravings. Changes in body weight and body composition usually take longer and depend on factors including pretreatment health status, dose, nutrition, activity levels and individual response.

Progress is rarely steady from week to week. Some weeks show a noticeable change while others may show very little, though this does not necessarily mean treatment has stopped working. The aim should always extend beyond the number on the scales, focussing on improved health and body composition, keeping muscle loss to a minimum.

How to Use Weight Loss Injections

Using these treatments appropriately means following the plan agreed with your prescriber rather than adjusting doses yourself in an attempt to influence results. Unsupervised dose changes can increase the risk of side effects.

Nutrition remains important even as appetite falls. Smaller portions still need to provide enough protein, based on your ideal body weight, along with other essential nutrients. Limiting refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed foods (UPFs) supports both weight management and general health. Regular activity, including resistance-based exercise where suitable, helps support muscle and favour fat loss. Good sleep, generally around seven to eight hours a night, stress management, and regular monitoring of both weight and waist measurements all form part of a well-designed approach.

Weight Loss Injections Side Effects

The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, reflux (heartburn) and abdominal discomfort, particularly on starting treatment or after a dose increase.

Less common but more serious effects can also occur, including pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. Severe, persistent abdominal pain, especially if it spreads towards the back, needs urgent medical assessment. Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration and should be treated.

Any new or worsening symptom should always be discussed with your prescribing team rather than managed alone.

Our Approach Before Prescribing

At Bazire Medical, before prescribing these treatments, we will discuss the benefits, risks and side effects with all patients who wish to use them. Any decision to start treatment is therefore made with a clear understanding of what to expect and of the support available throughout.
