Weight Loss Injections Side Effects

Written by Philip Bazire | October 29, 2026

Weight loss injections are generally well tolerated, but they are not without side effects. Understanding the common weight loss injections side effects, what to do about them and which symptoms need urgent attention helps you use treatment more confidently and more safely.

Severity of side effects varies from person to person, and also with the specific medication and the dose. What follows is general information rather than advice for your individual circumstances, and it does not replace the guidance of your prescribing team.

Common Gastrointestinal Effects

The most frequently reported side effects are gastrointestinal, and they are most likely in the first few weeks of treatment and after each dose increase. They include:

  • Nausea, the most common effect, which tends to improve as the body adjusts to the medication
  • Vomiting, sometimes following persistent nausea
  • Diarrhoea, particularly early in treatment
  • Constipation, either instead of or alongside diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Indigestion, bloating and reflux

Practical steps help a good deal. Eating slowly, stopping before you feel full and avoiding large or very rich meals reduces the load on a digestive system that is working more slowly. Staying well hydrated matters too, especially if you have had any vomiting or diarrhoea.

Reduced Appetite and Injection Site Reactions

A fall in appetite is the intended effect, but it can go further than expected. If intake drops too low, insufficient food intake and fatigue can follow, which is why protein and micronutrient intake needs active attention even when you are not hungry.

Redness, itching or mild pain at the injection site can also occur. These reactions are usually mild and transient, and rotating injection sites helps.

Weight Loss Injections Side Effects: Mounjaro

When it comes to weight loss injections side effects, Mounjaro users tend to report much the same pattern as the wider group. Gastrointestinal effects are the most common, tend to show up in the first few weeks or after a dose increase, and usually settle as the body adjusts.

Because Mounjaro acts on both the GLP-1 and GIP pathways, individual experience may differ from that of treatments acting on GLP-1 alone.

Serious Effects That Need Prompt Attention

More serious complications are rare, but you should know what to look for.

Pancreatitis

Severe, persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it spreads towards the back and is accompanied by nausea and vomiting, needs urgent medical assessment. Anyone with a history of pancreatitis should discuss this carefully before starting treatment.

Gallbladder problems

Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation can occur, particularly when there has been substantial weight loss. People with existing gallstones that have caused no symptoms may find they begin to experience pain and nausea related to eating.

Dehydration and the kidneys

Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, which in rare cases has been linked to acute kidney injury. Ensure an adequate fluid intake to protect your kidneys.

Low blood sugar

These medicines used alone do not generally cause low blood sugar, but the risk rises when they are combined with insulin or certain diabetes medications. Shakiness, sweating, dizziness and confusion are warning signs.

There is also a specific caution for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, and these treatments are not suitable in those circumstances.

Weight Loss Injections Side Effects: Long Term

When people ask about weight loss injections side effects long term, three separate issues are usually on their mind.

The first is the safety profile of the medication over extended use. Serious complications remain uncommon, but ongoing clinical monitoring is important, and anyone with a chronic illness, other significant conditions or several existing medications should have a thorough assessment before starting.

The second is what happens to muscle during weight loss. A sustained reduction in food intake, without sufficient protein and without resistance-based activity, risks excessive muscle loss. This is avoidable, but only with methodical attention to nutrition, activity and monitoring throughout treatment.

And finally, protecting your results afterwards and preventing weight regain. Building habits during treatment, such as regular activity, good sleep of around seven to eight hours a night, stress management, limiting refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed foods (UPFs), and regular monitoring of both weight and waist measurement, should be part of the plan from the outset, not once treatment ends.

Talk to Your Prescribing Team

Any new or worsening symptom should be discussed with your prescribing team rather than managed alone. Side effects are often manageable with a dose adjustment, a change in eating pattern or simply more time, but that judgement needs to be a clinical one.

At Bazire Medical, before prescribing these treatments, we will discuss the benefits, risks and side effects with all patients who wish to use them.
